What is PayPal?

PayPal is an American company which operates an online payments system and allows the exchange of money between people. It is the most widely used payments system for international payments. This is because using PayPal is really easy and doing international transactions becomes seamless. Businesses also try to add PayPal as a payment system due to their userbase and ease of doing transactions with a simple click.
Why do I need PayPal?
As mentioned in the previous section, a ton of businesses use PayPal as their payments provider. Hence, you would require a verified PayPal account to receive payments from companies. The steps to do so are outlined in this section. There are two types of PayPal accounts- personal and business. The added benefit of a business account is that you can receive payments from local users as well instead of only international transfers. If you want to earn money online, PayPal is the most widely used and therefore, it is advisable to use it to receive payments.
What are the fees that Paypal charges?
This is the second most asked question about PayPal, the first being how to set it up. Paypal does not charge any fee for opening an account with them, but it does charge fees on various types of transactions. The fee structure is complicated, and sometimes the fee is a lot more than you’d expect, making PayPal seem absolutely worthless. Still, since it has been in the business longer and is widely used, we would have to comply with the fees they charge.
- When you receive money from a purchase. Paypal charges a fixed fee on every transaction depending on the currency. They also charge a percentage of the amount you receive as fees which depend on the total monthly transaction amount. Apart from these in India, you are also charged GST. This applies to the amount of the total fees and not the transaction amount. For further information on this, you can visit their receiving payments page.
- When you receive payments from outside your country or region. The fee structure is the same as above but the percentage of fee changes. The percentage structure is different for international and domestic payments, even though the fixed fee is the same. The fixed fee only depends on the currency. In contrast, the percentage of the variable fee depends on the seller’s and buyer’s countries. The PayPal User Agreement has the complete list of fees, and you can read more about it over there.
- When you send personal payments using a debit or credit card. This fee is applicable if you want to make personal payments using your credit or debit card. This is not in scope with beermoney, and if you want to read more about the fees for these transactions, you can have a look at their fees page.
- When you send money from your PayPal account to your bank account using an eligible debit or prepaid card. When you withdraw money to your bank account from your PayPal account, you might usually encounter a currency conversion fee. Apart from that, there are no other fees when withdrawing. This fee is again dependent on the currency and the country, and you can have a look at their User Agreement or Fees page for the conversion fees.
Though the amount of fees is really overwhelming, and it might seem that PayPal is a complete disaster, there is a silver lining. Most of the companies that will pay you for the work you put in will consider the fees and pay you such that you don’t have to incur the majority of the fees mentioned above. Instead, the only fee you pay would be the withdrawal fee mentioned in the last point above.
For example, let’s say you are in India, and your bank currency is INR. If Clickworker pays you €10, you will receive €10 in your Paypal account and the only fee charged would be the conversion fee based on the EUR to INR rate. If Testable Mind pays you $10, you will receive $10 – $0.3 (Fixed Fee) – $0.58 (Variable Fee) = $9.22, which will be reflected in your PayPal account. There will be an additional conversion fee as well when you withdraw to your bank based on USD to INR rates. About 90% of the websites pay like Clickworker, and you would not have to incur a lot of fees.
If you’ve never heard of Clickworker or Testable Minds, we suggest going through these guides on How to get started with Clickworker and How to get started with Testable Minds.
